Safety

All students must attend Environmental Health & Safety's lab safety training session before working in the lab. This is offered in the department at the beginning of each academic year and includes several of EH&S's courses in one day. If you need to begin work before you can attend, a videotape of a previous session is available.

Chemical Safety Guidelines for working in the lab.
Fire Safety Guidelines - Exit procedures and information on extinguishers.
Emergency/Accident Procedures

Extensive safety information can be found in the binder labeled Cornell University Chemical Hygiene Plan which is located in the hallway outside room 258. This contains the hygiene plan as well as the following documents:
  • Overview of the MS&E Undergraduate Materials Laboratory and Location of Key Safety Features ("Overview..." is out of date but "Location..." is a good introduction for anyone working in the lab.)
  • Chemical Spill Response for Laboratory Personnel (This is a slightly updated version of what is in the binder.)
  • Standard Operating Procedure for Handling Liquid Nitrogen (Students must receive training and read and sign this before using liquid nitrogen in the lab.)
  • Standard Operating Procedure for Carcinogens and Highly Toxic Materials
