Rifat Onur Umucalilar arrives from Turkey

    Rifat Onur Umucalilar (who goes by Onur) joins our group on Monday August 3, 2009. He will be here for 6 months. Onur is finishing up his PhD thesis with Mehmet Oktel in Bilkent University. Onur is an expert on rotating optical lattices. He has done important work on the superfluid-insulator transition in this system, and connections with the Hofstadter butterfly. His most recent work has been on p-bands in rotating lattices. Onur is still looking for an apartment, so please let us know about any leads.

Sourish Basu Graduates

    Sourish Basu has graduated, and is starting a postdoctoral fellowship in the Netherlands. He will be working at SRON, the Netherlands Institute for Space Recearch, interpretting sattelite data with impact on climate science. Sourish's thesis is entitled: Quantum Degenerate Gases near a Feshbach resonance. It is not yet in the University library system, but will be available there soon.
