You can find the exercises in the lecture
notes.
Final project: Read a research paper that makes use of the formalism
developed in this course and write a pedagogical version of that paper,
with all details of the calculations filled in. If the amount of
material in a paper is too much, you can focus on an aspect of the
calculation. You are free to choose a paper of your own interest. Below
are some suggestions.
- Hartree and Cooperon contribution to zero bias anomaly in the
tunneling density of states of a disordered metal [B. L. Altshuler and
A. G. Aronov, in Electron-electron interactions in disordered systems,
edited by A.L. Efros and M. Pollak (North-Holland, 1985)].
- Weak localization correction to the conductivity of a disordered
metal with spin-orbit scattering [S. Hikani, A. I. Larkin, and Y.
Nagaoka, Prog. Theor. Phys. 63, 707 (1980)].
- Universal conductance fluctuations [B. L. Altshuler JETP Lett.
41, 648 (1985)].
- Image of the Fermi Surface in the Vibration Spectrum of a Metal
[W. Kohn, Phys. Rev. Lett. 2, 393 (1959); E. J. Woll, Jr. and W. Kohn,
Phys. Rev. 126, 1693 (1962)].
- Persistent currents in mesoscopic rings [V. Ambegaokar and U.
Eckern, Phys. Rev. Lett. 65, 381 (1990)].
- Conductance of a Quantum Wire in the Wigner-Crystal Regime [K. A.
Matveev, Phys. Rev. Lett. 92, 106801 (2004) and Phys. Rev. B 70, 245319
(2004)].
- Coulomb Interactions and Mesoscopic Effects in Carbon Nanotubes
[C. Kane, L. Balents, and M. P. A. Fisher, Phys. Rev. Lett. 79, 5086
(1997)].
- Suppression of the order parameter in homogeneous disordered
superconductors [R. A. Smith, M. Yu. Reizer, and J. W. Wilkins, Phys.
Rev. B 51, 6470 (1995)].
